Emotions and social development: Infants' recognition of emotions in others.

Infants generally begin to recognize emotional expressions after 6 months of age; some reports have even observed recognition in neonates. Emotional recognition is important for social referencing, in which infants "read" their parents' expressions to understand events. Three methods for studying how infants come to recognize emotion are described in this article: peek-a-boo, matching faces and...

On shame and voice-hearing

Hearing voices in the absence of another speaker-what psychiatry terms an auditory verbal hallucination-is often associated with a wide range of negative emotions. Mainstream clinical research addressing the emotional dimensions of voice-hearing has tended to treat these as self-evident, undifferentiated and so effectively interchangeable. Plastic reorganization of neural systems for perception of others in the congenitally blind

Recent evidence suggests that the function of the core system for face perception might extend beyond visual face-perception to a broader role in person perception. To critically test the broader role of core face-system in person perception, we examined the role of the core system during the perception of others in 7 congenitally blind individuals and 15 sighted subjects by measuring their neu...

Discrimination of fearful and angry emotional voices in sleeping human neonates: a study of the mismatch brain responses

Appropriate processing of human voices with different threat-related emotions is of evolutionarily adaptive value for the survival of individuals. Nevertheless, it is still not clear whether the sensitivity to threat-related information is present at birth. Using an odd-ball paradigm, the current study investigated the neural correlates underlying automatic processing of emotional voices of fea...
